LOCAL PRODUCTS
The agricultural employment constitutes the sovereign employment of the island's residents. The wine is undeniably considered one of the basic productsof Samos. Due to its unique quality it represents Samos worldwide. Even countries with organized wine production like France and Germany supply wine from Samos.
The Municipality of Karlovassi has big share in this production. Locations as Platanos are supported mainly through vine-growing and the result is indeed very appreciable. The production of olive oil is also appreciable. It is known that the ancient writers praised Samos more for the olive oil than the wine.
The local climate promote the culture of citrus fruits as well as other fruiterer trees. An other dynamic culture has been developed mainly in the Municipality of Kontakaiika with the production of horticultural in greenhouses. Another important local product is honey that is produced in small quantities, but has nevertheless high quality. In the past the region was cultivated with tobacco, but its culture has stopped over the last years.
