SAMOS HISTORY > History of the name Samos

The name Samos is of Phoenician origin, according to Stravo, meaning ‘rise by the shore’. The island however has had many other names such as Parthenia, a name given by the pelasgic tribe that introduced the worship of "Parthena Hera" to the island. Some of the other names given to Samos are Anthemis, Dryoussa, Doryssa, Kyparyssia, Imvrasia and Melamfylos.
